Case Studies
Measuring Impact can be a challenge for a service like ours so we use feedback and Case Studies to show our impact.
Attendance
Child A was increasingly missing school with minor illnesses such as diarrhoea, temperature, not having slept or a cough. Parents were invited in to meet with a nurse where we went through the absences and identified any common themes. Mum was having long term anxiety issues, and we identified that many of the times she kept the child off school were because she couldn’t face bringing them in. We agreed other adults who could support mum and who could step in if mum was unwell. We encouraged mum to access her GP for mental health support. We increased lines of communication between mum and school and changed the narrative to one of support rather than judgement. Attendance has subsequently improved considerably. Mum has also started working as a cleaner in the school.
Engagement
Child B was having continence issues at school. Mum was a single parent who tended not to ring back when contacted by school. Historically, she had not attended parents evenings or school activities. We initially contacted mum by text moving to face to face when trust had built. We identified that the continence issues were caused by constipation so could explain why this was happening and how a change of diet, increased fluids and a prescribed medication could resolve this. We spoke to the family GP to have the child assessed and medication prescribed. The constipation resolved with these interventions. This also supported us to build a relationship with mum where she can ‘pop in’ to school to see the Nurse and any simple health issues can be resolved. Because she associates the on site nurse with school this has built her willingness to engage with school in general.
