We are transforming the lives of children and families in our local schools. Are you ready for a new challenge and passionate about supporting our community and the children who need the most support? Do you have a problem solving attitude and a proactive approach to addressing inequality? Have you got really good communications skills with people from all sorts of backgrounds? Can you work with people who need nurture and support rather than judgement? MY School Health are an independent School Nursing service. We are looking for an enigmatic School Nurse Staff Nurse (Band 5) and Specialist Community Public Health School Nurse with a SCPHN BSc (Band 6) to work term time only to support and work independently within local schools.

The Independent School Nursing service works directly with individual schools providing an on site School Nurse for a number of hours a week or fortnight. We are not part of the statutory NHS or LA provision and work to complement these services by providing a much more intensive frontline service without the need for complex referral processes. The role involves all aspects of childhood health interventions and supporting schools and parents to ensure inequalities in health are identified and addressed. The age range we work with is from 2 to 19 years. Each school has different requirements with some needing parental appointments and advice sessions and others wanting PSHE lessons and one to ones with children and young people. Full training will be given but it would be helpful if candidates have a good working knowledge of child development, parenting, behaviour, anxiety, anger, as well as being willing to learn about continence, sleep and first level mental health interventions for children in school and delivering PSHE and other health related lessons. We do not hold a safeguarding caseload in this role but may work with children who are also involved with Children’s Services if there is a particular health issue to address.  The ideal candidate is expected to have experience of front line safeguarding and information governance policy and know what action to take when a safeguarding issue arises although up to date training is provided. You will be responsible for managing your own schools and caseloads of children within the school setting with remote supervision from a senior nurse.

The role is extremely rewarding and involves being a visible member of staff in class, with parents and in the school environment. It requires an individual who can work autonomously with minimal direction and who can work to develop the role as the service evolves. The benefits of this role are that you become part of the school team. You get to know the children and their parents and are able to identify issues early. You are able to have a massive impact for families that may be struggling by giving them practical support and advice and can continue to support them as long as they need you. You build a reputation in the schools as being able to bring a new perspective to the school environment and are very valued by the schools as a resource and source of health and behaviour advice. The role can develop as you go. We are keen to work with innovative proactive people and are happy to support you to develop skills through training and reflective practice. You are also part of developing a frontline service that is innovative and very special. This is the first time this type of service has been introduced in the UK and it is proving immensely popular with schools. Advantages: No weekend or evening work. Extensive preceptorship and training. Working hours fit in with the school day. Regular Supervision from skilled School Nurses. Regular work in the same schools and the opportunity to get to know the needs of the children without the constraints of statutory provision. Access to training and career development. Term time only paid pro rata with 5.6 weeks paid holiday.

Band 5 post £25655-£31534 full time all year round equivalent

The ideal candidate will have some experience in a community or hospital setting ideally in a 0-19 service or on a Children’s ward. However newly qualified nurses and those with different experience will also be considered. You must have a car available for use in the role and be willing to travel between schools during your working week. Working hours are between 9am and 3.30pm weekdays. Part time hours are available. There is no weekend or evening working required and this is a term time only contract paid pro rata over the full year. In return you get the chance to make a huge difference to children’s lives and to prove that no matter what your background everyone can achieve their full potential with the right support.

Band 6 post £32306-39027 full time all year round equivalent

The ideal candidate will be a SCPHN qualified nurse with some recent experience in School Nursing. The role will involve leading junior staff and supervising their work remotely. Working hours are 9-5 (or 3.30) Monday to Friday with part time hours available. The role is hard work and every day is spent in a school with minimal office time. However, in return you get a lovely job and a chance to go back to frontline proactive community nursing.

“I leave work every day with a smile on my face and pride that I’ve made a difference”.
